Craig M. Hammond, Associate AIA, recently published an architecture book about his Thesis Project.

Craig’s Thesis Project “seeks to explore the needs for the built environment around architecture education, and the unification of the School of Environmental Design at Cal Poly Pomona.”  The project itself is a new facility designed for the College of Environmental Design at Cal Poly with an emphasis on integrated learning, visual identity, and sustainable facilities.

The structure includes over 380,000 s.f. of classrooms, studios, exhibition spaces, computer labs, support spaces, two libraries, and a theatre.  One of the main features is the nearly 70,000 s.f. of outdoor connecting roof bridge paths functioning as a sustainable green roof and circulation mechanism for the building.  The studio roofs pitch slopes down towards the roof paths which use the modular green grid roof system.  The roof paths and bridges connect towards the Cal Poly historic and campus center bridging the newly unified facility to the campus library center, and community.

The building also uses extensive sun shades, sliding partitions, retractable walls, outdoor circulation, and contains an exhibition space + bridge spanning above Temple Drive at the main entrance to the university.
